Brackets and Italics in Quotations

Print this Topic Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Any insertions or alterations you make within quoted material should be enclosed in brackets [like so], not parentheses, to distinguish them from parenthetical phrases in the original material.

When italicizing words in quotations for emphasis, notify the reader with the ascription "italics mine" or "emphasis added."
