Please use the following form when quoting Scripture: "Seek the LORD while he may be found" (Isa. 55:6). Notice that the closing punctuation normally follows the parenthesis containing the Scripture reference. But in block quotations, the closing punctuation falls at the end of the verse, not after the reference.
Be sure to indicate at the beginning of your manuscript what version of Scripture you quote throughout the work, including your own translations. For example: "Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles, a division of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved." When quoting additional versions of Scripture, please identify which version you are quoting in each case. For example: (2 Tim. 3:16-17 NASB). The abbreviation for the translation should be in small caps and follow the verse with no intervening punctuation, as in the preceding example.
Authors are responsible for checking the accuracy of all Scripture references, as well as the precise wording, punctuation, and capitalization of all Scripture quotations. The simplest and safest way to ensure consistency is to copy and paste the Scriptures you quote from one of the many electronic translations that come packaged with various Bible software programs.
Books of the Bible should not be abbreviated in the text of the manuscript. They should normally be abbreviated in parenthesis and in notes, according to the following list:
